PXL University College is a higher-education institution in Flanders, Belgium, with approximately 8000 students. PXL is located in the city of Hasselt, in the province of Limburg. PXL is renowned for the high quality of its teaching, research and innovation of the region. PXL is a pioneer on 'technology enhanced learning'. The laptop was introduced in PXL in 2001, following the 'bring-your-own-device'-principle. Blended learning is central to our educational policy. ICT is a constant element in both face-to-face classroom activities and distance learning activities. We are also developing innovative pilot programs that incorporate the principle of 'flexible distance education'. The central vision is to provide maximal development chances for every student through the use of ICT in education.
The expertise centre for Educational Innovation is closely related to the department PXL-Education (the teacher training institute). The research is practice-oriented, and mainly focuses on three topics, one of which is the innovative use of ICT in education. Research on this topic focuses on integrating tablets, blended learning, flexible distance learning, MOOCs, e-coaching, virtual reality and learning analytics in preschool, primary, secondary and higher education. The central methodology in our research group is design-based research.
Five years ago, we initiated the research line 'Tablio' on the integration of tablets in education, mainly focusing on classroom differentiation with tablets. In this research line we did exploratory studies on tablet usage in classrooms, we worked with teacher design teams to develop innovative pedagogies, and we designed and implemnted a task-based MOOC with 350 participants (teachers, teacher educators, student teachers). Furthermore, we are the lead partner of the Erasmus+ KA2 project 'Tablio', which includes the development of a design toolkit, the design of innovative pedagogies by teacher design teams, and (inter)national bootcamps for teachers, teacher educators and student teachers.
Two team members of the centre for Educational Innovation are involved in the DEIMP project. Wouter Hustinx is head of research of the centre for Educational Innovation, manages the implementation of technology in education in PXL University College as a staff member, and is project leader of the Erasmus+ Tablio project. Dr Marie Evens is researcher at the centre for Educational Innovation and teacher educator at PXL-Education, and has research experience on the use of online learning environments in teacher education.
